Convert HEIC to WebP on your device
If the photos are going on a website, WebP is usually what you want: it is close to HEIC in efficiency, every browser displays it, and most CMS and site builders accept it. This page decodes HEIC and encodes WebP entirely on your machine.
Turn off your Wi-Fi. It still works. The quality slider controls the trade-off. Around 80 is visually lossless for most photos; drop to 70 for hero images where file size matters most.
Why convert HEIC to WebP
- Typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than the equivalent JPG.
- Set a maximum width at the same time so you are not uploading 4,000-pixel images to a 1,200-pixel layout.
- Transparency is preserved if the source has it.
How to convert HEIC to WebP without uploading
- Drop HEIC files onto the box above, or click it to pick them. On a phone you can choose straight from your photos.
- Adjust quality if you want. The default is tuned to be visually identical to the original.
- Download. Each file gets a button as it finishes; with more than one file you can download a single zip. The WebP files are written entirely on your device.
About HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container)
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads have shot in by default since iOS 11 in 2017. It stores photos at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG, which is why Apple chose it, and it is also why so many websites, Windows PCs and older apps cannot open it.
Windows needs a paid HEVC extension to open HEIC files, most upload forms reject them, and many email clients show them as attachments nobody can open.
About WebP
WebP is Google’s web image format. It makes files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, supports transparency and animation, and is supported by every current browser, which is why so many websites now serve it.
Outside the browser WebP is still awkward: older versions of Windows Photo Viewer, many desktop editors, print shops and upload forms do not accept it.
Questions
Should I use WebP or AVIF for my website?
AVIF is smaller but slower to encode and a touch less widely supported. WebP is the safe default; AVIF is worth it for large hero images if you can serve WebP as a fallback.
Can I upload WebP to Instagram, Facebook or marketplaces?
Often not. Social and marketplace upload forms are the places WebP is still rejected. Use HEIC to JPG for those.
What quality setting should I use?
Start at 80. Go to 85 or 90 for images with fine texture or text; 70 to 75 for backgrounds and thumbnails.
