Convert WebP to JPG on your device

You saved an image from a website and got a .webp file that your photo editor, print service or upload form will not take. Drop it here and get a JPG. The conversion happens in the browser tab; the image is not sent anywhere.

Turn off your Wi-Fi. It still works.
Metadata is stripped. Orientation is kept.

Animated WebP files are converted to a still JPG of the first frame, since JPG has no animation. Transparent areas become white, because JPG has no transparency; choose WebP to PNG if you need to keep it.

    Why convert WebP to JPG

How to convert WebP to JPG without uploading

    1. Drop WebP files onto the box above, or click it to pick them. On a phone you can choose straight from your photos.
    2. Adjust quality if you want. The default is tuned to be visually identical to the original.
    3. Download. Each file gets a button as it finishes; with more than one file you can download a single zip. The JPG files are written entirely on your device.

    About WebP

WebP is Google’s web image format. It makes files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, supports transparency and animation, and is supported by every current browser, which is why so many websites now serve it.

Outside the browser WebP is still awkward: older versions of Windows Photo Viewer, many desktop editors, print shops and upload forms do not accept it.

    About JPG (JPEG)

JPG is the format everything opens. It has been the default for photographs since the early 1990s, every device, browser, upload form and photo printer accepts it, and at a sensible quality setting the compression is invisible for photos.

JPG cannot store transparency, and re-saving a JPG many times slowly degrades it.

    Questions

Why do websites give me WebP files?

Because WebP is smaller, so pages load faster. Browsers display it fine; the trouble starts when you save it and try to use it somewhere that predates the format.

Will converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

Slightly, because both are lossy and this is a re-encode. At quality 90 it is not visible. There is no way to recover detail the WebP already discarded.

How do I stop Chrome saving images as WebP?

You cannot force a site to serve JPG, but you can convert after saving, which is what this page does. Some browser extensions request the original format; results vary.
