Convert HEIC to PNG on your device

Convert HEIC to PNG when you need a lossless file: screenshots taken on an iPhone, images headed into a design tool, or anything you plan to edit further and do not want JPG compression touching first.

Turn off your Wi-Fi. It still works.
Metadata is stripped. Orientation is kept.

The decode and the PNG encode both happen in your browser. Expect large files: PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a 12-megapixel photo can be 20 to 30 MB. If you only need the photo to open everywhere, HEIC to JPG is the better fit.

    Why convert HEIC to PNG

How to convert HEIC to PNG without uploading

    1. Drop HEIC files onto the box above, or click it to pick them. On a phone you can choose straight from your photos.
    2. Adjust quality if you want. PNG is lossless, so there is nothing to adjust.
    3. Download. Each file gets a button as it finishes; with more than one file you can download a single zip. The PNG files are written entirely on your device.

About HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container)

HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads have shot in by default since iOS 11 in 2017. It stores photos at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG, which is why Apple chose it, and it is also why so many websites, Windows PCs and older apps cannot open it.

Windows needs a paid HEVC extension to open HEIC files, most upload forms reject them, and many email clients show them as attachments nobody can open.

    About PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it the right choice for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text. For photographs it is usually several times larger than a JPG of the same picture.

PNG files of photos are large, and PNG has no way to store the camera metadata that photo formats carry.

    Questions

Is PNG better than JPG for HEIC photos?

Only if you need lossless output or transparency. For ordinary photos JPG is a fraction of the size with no visible difference. PNG shines for screenshots, UI captures, text and graphics.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC uses video-codec compression and discards detail the eye will not miss. PNG keeps every pixel. A tenfold size increase is normal for photographs.

Does this keep the photo’s metadata?

No. PNG has no standard place for camera EXIF, and this tool strips metadata as part of the re-encode anyway. Orientation is applied to the pixels, so the image is the right way up.
