Convert WebP to PNG on your device

Use WebP to PNG when the image has a transparent background you need to keep, or when it is a logo, icon or screenshot that should stay pixel-exact. PNG is lossless, so nothing further is lost after the WebP decode.

Turn off your Wi-Fi. It still works.
Metadata is stripped. Orientation is kept.

For photographs, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file. For anything with transparency or sharp edges, PNG is the right call.

    Why convert WebP to PNG

How to convert WebP to PNG without uploading

    1. Drop WebP files onto the box above, or click it to pick them. On a phone you can choose straight from your photos.
    2. Adjust quality if you want. PNG is lossless, so there is nothing to adjust.
    3. Download. Each file gets a button as it finishes; with more than one file you can download a single zip. The PNG files are written entirely on your device.

    About WebP

WebP is Google’s web image format. It makes files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, supports transparency and animation, and is supported by every current browser, which is why so many websites now serve it.

Outside the browser WebP is still awkward: older versions of Windows Photo Viewer, many desktop editors, print shops and upload forms do not accept it.

    About PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it the right choice for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text. For photographs it is usually several times larger than a JPG of the same picture.

PNG files of photos are large, and PNG has no way to store the camera metadata that photo formats carry.

    Questions

Does WebP to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. The alpha channel is carried through to the PNG unchanged.

Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses aggressively; PNG stores every pixel exactly. For a photo the PNG can be ten times larger. For a logo with flat colours the difference is small.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

The first frame is converted. PNG does not support animation (APNG is rare and not produced here).
