Convert PNG to AVIF on your device

For transparent graphics headed to the web, AVIF is usually the smallest option that still looks exact. The encode happens in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Turn off your Wi-Fi. It still works.
Metadata is stripped. Orientation is kept.

Keep a PNG original for editing. AVIF is a delivery format, and re-editing a lossy file is never ideal.

    Why convert PNG to AVIF

How to convert PNG to AVIF without uploading

    1. Drop PNG files onto the box above, or click it to pick them. On a phone you can choose straight from your photos.
    2. Adjust quality if you want. The default is tuned to be visually identical to the original.
    3. Download. Each file gets a button as it finishes; with more than one file you can download a single zip. The AVIF files are written entirely on your device.

    About PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it the right choice for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text. For photographs it is usually several times larger than a JPG of the same picture.

PNG files of photos are large, and PNG has no way to store the camera metadata that photo formats carry.

About AVIF (AV1 Image File Format)

AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, derived from the AV1 video codec. It typically produces files about half the size of JPG at the same quality, supports transparency, HDR and wide colour, and is supported in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16.4 or later.

AVIF is slow to encode, barely supported outside browsers, and routinely rejected by upload forms, so it is a great delivery format and a poor exchange format.

    Questions

    Is AVIF lossless?

It can be, but the lossless mode is rarely smaller than a good PNG. This tool encodes lossy AVIF at high quality, which is where it wins.

Why does my transparent AVIF look slightly different at the edges?

Chroma subsampling can soften coloured edges against transparency. Raise the quality if you notice it.

Should I use AVIF or WebP for PNG graphics?

AVIF is smaller; WebP has a true lossless mode and wider tool support. For a logo, WebP lossless; for a big illustration, AVIF.
